Remembrance Day 1990
500 Weeks #030
The 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is Remembrance Day in Commonwealth countries. It is a memorial day which has been observed since the end of the First World War as a way to remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
I was assigned by Share newspaper to go to old City Hall in Toronto and cover the ceremonies in September 1990 where Lincoln Alexander - then serving as the
24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario – would be laying a wreath at the cenotaph.
It was a sombre, overcast day and the difficult part was positioning. Have to be on site on time, and to be in the right spot to have a good view of the proceedings. The weather suited the gravity of the moment.
Please observe a minute or two of silence today, and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend this land and it’s freedoms. Freedom is never free.
